What is a GTM engineer? Role, skills and stack
A GTM engineer builds the data, automation and AI workflows behind pipeline. What the role does each week, how it differs from RevOps, the usual stack and what it pays.

The short answer
A GTM engineer (go-to-market engineer) is a technical operator who builds the systems that create pipeline: data enrichment, signal detection, outbound workflows, AI research steps and reply routing. Where RevOps keeps the revenue machine accurate and reported, a GTM engineer builds new ways to find and reach buyers. The role usually sits between sales, marketing, RevOps and data, and its daily tools are a CRM, Clay or a similar data tool, an automation platform and, more and more, code.

#What a GTM engineer does in a normal week
Job titles vary, but the week looks similar across companies. Here's a realistic one at a 60-person B2B SaaS company.
| Day | Work | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Review last week's plays with the sales lead | Kill one weak play, pick one to build |
| Tuesday | Build a signal query from a public dataset and enrich matching accounts | A table of 140 accounts with a dated reason to reach out |
| Wednesday | Write an AI research step and a proof asset template | A per-account summary and benchmark, reviewed on 20 samples |
| Thursday | Wire the play into sending tools and the CRM | Sequences live, replies routed with the play name attached |
| Friday | Fix data quality issues and document the play | A one-page runbook a rep or AI agent can follow |
Notice what's missing: cold calling, demos, quota. A GTM engineer is measured on the systems that produce pipeline, not on closing it.
#Where the role sits

In the 2026 State of GTM Engineering report, built from a survey of 228 practitioners, who the role reports to is one of four benchmark areas, because companies still place it under sales, RevOps, marketing or a founder. What matters more than the reporting line is that one person owns the pipeline systems end to end.
#GTM engineer vs RevOps vs SDR vs sales engineer
| Role | Core job | Measured on | Typical tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTM engineer | Build systems that find, research and reach buyers | Pipeline from plays they built, time to launch new plays | Clay, n8n, Python, CRM, sending tools |
| RevOps | Keep the revenue process accurate, reported and governed | Forecast accuracy, data hygiene, process adoption | CRM admin, BI, CPQ |
| SDR | Start conversations and book meetings | Meetings booked and held | Sequencer, phone, LinkedIn |
| Sales engineer | Prove the product works for a specific buyer | Technical win rate | Demo environments, product docs |
The lines blur at small companies. A RevOps lead may build Clay tables and a GTM engineer may own CRM fields. The useful split: RevOps optimizes the machine that exists, a GTM engineer builds new parts for it.
#Skills that matter
#Data
Comfort with tables, joins and messy records. Basic SQL, reading JSON from an API, and knowing which enrichment provider is right for which field. Most of the job is getting good data in the right place.
#Systems
Building workflows that survive real use: retries, rate limits, deduping, logging. Whether the tool is Clay, n8n, Make or Python, the habits are the same.
#Copy and judgment
A GTM engineer writes the prompts and templates that produce messages, so they need to recognize a good one. The best can explain why a buyer would care in a single sentence.
#Code, increasingly
The same report found a gap of about $45K between GTM engineers who code and those who work no-code only, and 71% of respondents use AI coding tools. You don't need to be a software engineer, but Python and an AI coding assistant are becoming standard kit.
#The usual GTM engineer stack
| Layer | What it does | Common choices |
|---|---|---|
| System of record | Accounts, people, deals and activity | HubSpot, Salesforce |
| Data and enrichment | Find accounts, fill fields, run AI research | Clay, Apollo, provider APIs |
| Signals | Detect a reason to reach out now | Public datasets, product data, job and news feeds |
| Automation | Move data and trigger steps | n8n, Make, Zapier, Python |
| Sending | Email and LinkedIn delivery | Instantly, Smartlead, awwreach for LinkedIn |
| AI | Research, drafting, classification | LLM APIs, AI coding tools, MCP-connected agents |
Clay shows up in 84% of stacks in the State of GTM Engineering survey (GTME Pulse summary), which is why “Clay GTM engineer” is a common search and job-post phrase. It's a tool, not the job. A strong GTM engineer can rebuild a play elsewhere when a tool stops fitting.
#What GTM engineers earn
The State of GTM Engineering 2026 report puts median US total compensation at $132K, with the coding premium noted above. Treat it as a directional benchmark: the sample is self-selected, and pay swings widely with seniority, location and whether the role includes ownership of a team.
#Clay, Gumloop or a GTM engineer?
Founders sometimes ask whether buying Clay or Gumloop means they don't need the role. The tools make a GTM engineer faster. They don't decide which signal matters, which accounts to skip or what proof to send. A company with Clay and nobody owning it ends up with a pricey spreadsheet. See Clay alternatives for GTM engineers for how the tools compare by job.
#When to hire your first GTM engineer
- Reps spend more time researching and building lists than talking to buyers.
- You have a message that works but can't find enough of the right accounts.
- Launching a new outbound motion takes more than two weeks.
- Replies from different channels don't reach the CRM in a consistent way.
- You've bought Clay or an AI SDR tool and nobody owns it.
Two or more of these usually means the bottleneck is systems, not headcount. A GTM engineer will likely add more pipeline than another SDR.
#A builder role, not a tool operator
The GTM engineer exists because pipeline now depends on systems more than on hours. The title will keep shifting, but the work stays the same: find a real reason to reach a buyer, build it into something that runs every week, and hand reps conversations instead of spreadsheets.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Job posts for GTM engineers grew quickly through 2024 and 2025, and the 2026 State of GTM Engineering survey collected responses from 228 people in the role across 32 countries.
